Introduction

Rhema Institute for Development (RHID) is a local non-profit organization that has mandate to serve the poor, vulnerable and marginalized communities world-wide. Rhema is founded on the word of God refers to the spoken word of Jesus.

 

Currently, Rhema has two impact areas of Lilongwe and Dowa, in Traditional Authorities Mbang’ombe, Chimutu, Chitukula, Kabudula, Mtema and Kayembe, Msakambewa, Mkukula, Dzoole respectively with a total catchment population of over 750,000 people.

 

Vision

A healthy and morally upright community that is spiritually and socio-economically empowered, transformed and self-sustaining in all aspects of life including food security, health, environment and education

 

Mission statement

We exist to reduce poverty and mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS and provide care and support to those infected and affected in Malawi and beyond. We use integrated approaches to accomplish the mission through covering a wide range of community livelihoods interventions covering thematic areas of Microfinance (VSL and Enterprise development); Food security; Water and sanitation; Human Rights which include socio-economic, political and cultural rights and child rights, Climate change and community renewable energy, environmental and natural resource management and governance. Governance

Rhema is governed by a Board which operates on voluntary basis comprising of professional development experts in the fields of Finance, Health, NGO Management and Administration, Legal, and development. The roles and responsibilities of the Board are to:

  • To provide strategic direction for RHID and review implementation of strategic plans;
  • To ensure transparency and accountability of organization in delivery of community services.
  • To lobby for visibility of Rhema, facilitate identification of financial resources and resolving of all legal issues of the organization.
  • To monitor operational performance and management and provide guidance on improving the quality, the resource base, cost effectiveness and sustainability of programs to ensure effective risk management and internal control
  • To enforce Rhema, carry out reviews and directions for smooth operations in line with the government, donor and NGO board policies.

 

Secretariat

Rhema Institute for Development is managed by a Secretariat, headed by the Executive Director to assist the Board in the day-to-day running of the operations. The current physical address is along the Lilongwe-Mzuzu main road at Lumbadzi. Rhema has Field Offices at Chibvala and Chigonthi EPAs in Dowa and Lilongwe Districts respectively.

 

Network 

  • Rhema Institute for Development have service contracts with Dowa and Lilongwe District councils.
  • Rhema networks with the Youth, Women, Girls and Children as marginalised groups of society, in 2008 Rhema implemented a Youth Behaviour Change Intervention with funding from NAC.
  • Rhema networks with various development partners including TAPP; Lumbadzi Clinic, DAPP; MANASO; DACC, CASS, GLI, DSWO; DYO, AYO, CUMO,MAZIKO, COGI Ministries etc and will continue to identify partners in development for the equal benefit of communities.
  • Rhema has currently field officers in all Traditional Areas that we work with.
  • Rhema has partnered with Hope for A Child-UK that has been assisting in organisition set-up,operations and have supported in Women, Children Hunger Integrated and Theatre projects. Rhema has also Partnered with Accounting For International Development (AFID- UK) which has been assisting in financial Management.

Achievements: by 2016

 

Rhema has established 150 VSL with approximately MK66 million in savings.

 

  • 19 employees
  • 8 community volunteers in Theatre Forum
  • 20 Lead Farmers
  • 4 Livestock Technicians
  • 30 pigs, 30 goats, 450 rabbits and, 450 chickens distributed
  • 18 Youth groups
  • MK 40,000,000 gross annual budget

 

Youth Prevention and Behaviour Change Intervention

  • In 2008 Rhema implemented above project with overall goal to reduce prevalence and impact of HIV/AIDS among 21,000 rural youth

 

 

Women, Children, Integrated Hunger Project

  • With support from Hope for A Child (Uk), RHID has empowered women through Women,Children Hunger Integrated Project. The project aims at promoting food security and livelihood of farm families.
